As an athlete, one of the last things I expected was to develop arthritis. However, I did. To me, arthritis meant I had to slow down, get a cane, and keep my legs elevated at all times. My doctor helped me to understand that I could continue living my life with some simple modifications to my daily routine. I did not have to give up sports. I created this blog to help other athletes who have been newly diagnosed with arthritis. With proper nutrition and the right lifestyle changes, you do not have to give up the sports you love.

Every year, about 264,000 women learn they have breast cancer. As alarming as this diagnosis can be, most instances of breast cancer are highly treatable. And, there are several different directions your oncology treatment may decide to take to ensure the most successful treatment outcome in your case.

Chemotherapy is often recommended for breast cancer treatment, and it may need to be delivered intravenously. While IV chemotherapy can have some uncomfortable moments, getting prepared in advance can make the experience a bit easier. Take a look at a few things you can do to prepare for your chemotherapy sessions during breast cancer treatment

1. Make arrangements for transportation

While you may be able to drive after chemotherapy sessions, it is always recommended that you have transportation arranged. You may feel a little groggy and your reaction times may be slowed. Therefore, it is best if you have someone who can pick you up directly after treatment to drive you home.

2. Pack a chemo-session bag

You may be in your chemo session for up to eight hours, so having something to help you pass the time will be valuable. Pack a small bag with items from home before your chemo session. A few things to consider bringing along include:

  • Books or magazines
  • Chargers for your phone or electronic devices
  • Small craft projects to busy your hands
  • Lip balm
  • Hand lotion
  • Light snacks

3. Support your body before treatment

Giving your body everything it needs before your chemotherapy sessions will help you recover faster when your sessions are over. Try to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to treatment, eat nutrient-rich foods, and get enough rest. On the day of your chemotherapy visits, consider taking a walk before your session if you feel up to it. And, make sure you eat a well-balanced meal before you go as chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment may leave you with little appetite later in the day.

4. Ask for help at home

During chemotherapy treatment, you can feel a bit drained. You may not have a lot of energy for cooking or handling daily responsibilities. Therefore, having a good support team to help you out can be so beneficial. Talk to your loved ones about what you will be going through and where you may need a little help. Something as simple as a friend dropping off a hot meal to your family or someone to watch after your pets can allow you time to rest.
