Recognizing The Signs That Your Varicose Veins Are Worsening

As an athlete, one of the last things I expected was to develop arthritis. However, I did. To me, arthritis meant I had to slow down, get a cane, and keep my legs elevated at all times. My doctor helped me to understand that I could continue living my life with some simple modifications to my daily routine. I did not have to give up sports. I created this blog to help other athletes who have been newly diagnosed with arthritis. With proper nutrition and the right lifestyle changes, you do not have to give up the sports you love.

Varicose veins, twisted and swollen veins just under the skin, go beyond a mere cosmetic worry. An exacerbation of varicose veins may indicate underlying health problems that demand prompt attention. Identifying these indicators can prompt you to seek timely medical assistance, potentially averting complications.

Increased Swelling and Pain

One of the most noticeable signs that varicose veins are worsening is increased swelling and pain. Initially, varicose veins might cause mild discomfort or a heavy feeling in the legs. However, as the condition progresses, this discomfort can turn into persistent pain, swelling, and throbbing, which may indicate that the veins are struggling more to return blood to the heart.

Skin Changes

Changes in the skin around varicose veins can also signal worsening conditions. Look for skin discoloration, dryness, or itchiness around the affected area. When the skin becomes inflamed or develops a reddish or brownish hue, it could mean that blood is pooling in the veins, leading to increased pressure and potential damage to the skin.

Ulcers and Open Wounds

The appearance of ulcers or open sores near varicose veins is a serious sign that the condition has advanced. These ulcers often develop around the ankles and can be slow to heal due to poor blood circulation. If you notice any sores or wounds that are not healing properly, it is crucial to seek medical advice promptly.

Restless Legs

Restless legs syndrome, characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, especially at night, can be another indicator of worsening varicose veins. This condition can disrupt sleep and significantly impact quality of life. Persistent restlessness in the legs suggests that the veins are under significant stress, contributing to discomfort and agitation.

Blood Clots

The formation of blood clots, or thrombophlebitis, in varicose veins is a critical warning sign. Clots can cause the vein to become hard, tender, and warm to the touch. If left untreated, blood clots can travel to deeper veins or even to the lungs, posing a severe health risk.

Heaviness and Fatigue

A sense of heaviness and fatigue in the legs, especially after standing or sitting for extended periods, can indicate that your varicose veins are deteriorating. This symptom reflects the increasing difficulty your veins are having in circulating blood effectively, leading to a feeling of weariness and sluggishness.

Seeking Medical Advice

If any of these signs are present, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent further complications and improve overall vascular health. Contact your doctor for more information
