As an athlete, one of the last things I expected was to develop arthritis. However, I did. To me, arthritis meant I had to slow down, get a cane, and keep my legs elevated at all times. My doctor helped me to understand that I could continue living my life with some simple modifications to my daily routine. I did not have to give up sports. Caring for your teeth on a routine basis is necessary to keep them looking their best. Children tend to be susceptible to cavities, leading to the possibility of dental issues. Taking action from a young age is necessary to build positive dental habits and avoid problems. Here are some steps to use to keep your child's teeth cavity-free.

Keep On Top Of Sugar Intake

Sugar is one of the main foods that lead to tooth decay if it is eaten regularly. If you allow your child to eat sugary snacks as a part of their daily food intake, you may find that their teeth suffer from this action. Make it a priority to monitor your child's eating habits so you can make changes if sugary foods are eaten often. Provide your child with healthy eating options. Instead of fruit juice, offer water or milk. Instead of cookies or cake, provide your child with honey-sweetened granola or fruit. While there are still sugars in sweet healthy food options, the content is less than processed foods.

Start Dental Processes Early

It is wise to bring your child to a dentist early on. Although they likely have only a few teeth at this time, a dentist can check the positioning of soon-to-be emerging teeth to determine whether they are growing properly. They will also be able to see their placement. If an issue is discovered during this time, it will be noted so that future action can be taken to guide teeth into proper positioning. 

Brushing your child's teeth should be started early as well. Even before a child's first tooth emerges, you can use a finger brush with a dab of toddler toothpaste and glide it over your child's gums. This way, when teeth emerge, they get the right start, free of possible decay. The procedure also eases your child into the procedure of tooth-brushing so they become used to it early on.

Do Not Slack On Dental Appointments

Regular appointments with a dentist help to thwart dental issues that may not be discovered without a professional assessment. Your child's pediatric dentist will recommend a schedule for evaluations to keep your child's teeth healthy. If a void is discovered in a tooth, early treatment can help to keep it from causing damage to the tooth. Baby teeth can be filled, just as adult teeth can.
