How to Get the Most Out of Your Gym Membership

As an athlete, one of the last things I expected was to develop arthritis. However, I did. To me, arthritis meant I had to slow down, get a cane, and keep my legs elevated at all times. My doctor helped me to understand that I could continue living my life with some simple modifications to my daily routine. I did not have to give up sports. I created this blog to help other athletes who have been newly diagnosed with arthritis. With proper nutrition and the right lifestyle changes, you do not have to give up the sports you love.

Are gym memberships expensive? Really, the answer to that question depends on how you use the gym. If you only go once a month, then yes, your gym membership probably is expensive for what you get. On the other hand, if you fully utilize the gym's services, then you'll probably feel like you're getting a great deal. So, how do you get more out of your gym membership? Take a look.

1. Attend classes.

Have you ever looked at the cost of attending individual fitness classes? It's not unusual to spend $20, $30, or even $50 for a single class when you pay a la carte. So, when fitness classes are included in the cost of your gym membership, you only need to attend a few in order to really get your money's worth out of that membership. Not only can classes give you a good workout, but they can teach you new moves. It's easier to stay motivated during classes, and they're a good way to meet other gym-goers who share your preferences for workouts.

2. Learn how to use equipment you've never used before.

Many people end up using the same equipment again and again when they go to the gym. If you like the equipment you're using, then you should keep using it — but don't limit yourself. Other equipment is there for you to use, so by learning how to use it, you will be getting more out of your gym membership. Ask a gym employee for help, or look up videos online that teach you how to use various pieces of equipment. You may find a new favorite, or you might just work a new set of muscles you didn't realize you needed to work.

3. Talk to people.

You can break out of your bubble and chat with people at the gym. If you make a few friends, you could feel like your gym membership is worth it. Plus, once you have gym friends, you'll be motivated to attend more often, and then you'll really be getting more out of your membership.

If someone has their headphones on and is "in the zone," then don't bother them, but feel free to chat with people in more social areas such as by the water fountain, near the pool, and in the hall waiting for a class.

Your gym membership is what you make it. If you put in the effort to get a great value, then you will.
