As an athlete, one of the last things I expected was to develop arthritis. However, I did. To me, arthritis meant I had to slow down, get a cane, and keep my legs elevated at all times. My doctor helped me to understand that I could continue living my life with some simple modifications to my daily routine. I did not have to give up sports. I created this blog to help other athletes who have been newly diagnosed with arthritis. With proper nutrition and the right lifestyle changes, you do not have to give up the sports you love.

When you have a sports injury, it means that there is an injury to the musculoskeletal system that was caused while participating in a sporting activity. Your musculoskeletal system is composed of your bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. However, if you sustain the same type of injury that's usually associated with sporting activities while you were doing something not related to a sport, your injury may still be referred to as a sports injury. Ways in which sports injuries can be treated

The treatment plan for your injury can vary greatly and will depend on many factors. These factors include the type, location, severity, any other injuries, and your medical history. The treatment plan can include medications, cold packs, hot compresses, rest, the elevation of the affected limb, surgery, and/or physical therapy, and more. 

What can physical therapy do?

If you are given physical therapy as part of your treatment plan, then you want to try to do what the physical therapist directs you to do as best as you can. However, if you find that doing something hurts you more than what's expected, then you want to stop that activity and let the physical therapist know; they may need to make changes to the activity or you may need to stop it altogether.

Physical therapy can include a lot of specialized treatments, such as specific exercises, manual therapy, massages, conditioning, pain management, mobility improvement, balance improvement, targeted strengthening, core strengthening, and post-surgery rehab.

Why it's important to follow doctor's orders

If you are an athlete who is suffering from a sports injury, then you may want to rush through the treatments or even skip steps in your treatment plan in order to get back to playing the sport you are involved in. However, this is not advisable for many reasons. 

The health care professionals have come together and created your treatment plan because it will get you back to the best condition possible. When you don't listen to the advice or you do skip steps, then you may not heal correctly or even fully. This can leave your body more susceptible to another injury and if you do get injured in the future, then your prognosis may even be worse.
