Three Plants And Herbs You Can Grow To Treat Urinary Problems

As an athlete, one of the last things I expected was to develop arthritis. However, I did. To me, arthritis meant I had to slow down, get a cane, and keep my legs elevated at all times. My doctor helped me to understand that I could continue living my life with some simple modifications to my daily routine. I did not have to give up sports. I created this blog to help other athletes who have been newly diagnosed with arthritis. With proper nutrition and the right lifestyle changes, you do not have to give up the sports you love.

Three Plants And Herbs You Can Grow To Treat Urinary Problems

Urinary problems, from overactive bladder to enlarged prostate issues, can all be treated naturally. Better still is the news that some of these plants and herbs can be grown right in your own backyard (or at least in a greenhouse). If you cannot visit with urologists anytime soon, you could have some comfort for these problems right in your backyard or greenhouse garden. Here are just three of these plants and herbs and the urinary problems they treat.

Capsaicin from Red Hot Chili Peppers

If you love spicy food and you suffer from an overactive bladder and frequent leaks, you are in luck. Eating red hot chili peppers, which contain capsaicin, can prevent leaks and decrease that urgency you feel to urinate. It works for both men and women. The downside is that you may have to suffer a little heartburn to urinate and leak less, but many people who have tried this approach would prefer a little heartburn to urine leaks and spending a lot of time in the bathroom.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto leaves are brewed to make a tea, and the crushed berries can be used as a medicine too. These natural medicines from the saw palmetto plant are frequently used to treat an enlarged prostate, which in turn could reduce the urgency to urinate. The downsides to growing this plant for personal use are that the plant takes a couple of years to grow from a seed, and it has to be grown in a very hot area. You can counteract these issues by buying a budding plant instead of growing it from a seed, and growing the plant in a hothouse or greenhouse on your property. Otherwise, look for tea or supplements in pill form at a local pharmacy.

Comfrey

Comfrey has been used for centuries, both inside the body and out. It has multiple positive uses that have proven results, and it easily grows in just about any garden. When you use it in conjunction with urinary problems, it acts as a demulcent (mucous-coating to reduce pain and discomfort), as well as an anti-inflammatory and an alkalizing agent for your urine. The leaves of the comfrey plant are steamed and steeped to create a tea, which may taste bitter and odd. Add some honey to it and it will go down easier. A cup or two a day is all you need. It is very effective for urinary tract and bladder infections, both of which can make you feel like you have to urinate more frequently.
